Living By The Golden Rule

NOTE: This was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Bob works closely and frequently communicates with our Foundations Health facilities. It is so inspiring to see how each care team embodies the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."
Shemika Metcalf has been a Nursing Assistant for 20 years, 18 of those years have been spent at Respiratory and Nursing Center of Dayton. Shemika is a Lead Nursing Assistant and a natural leader. Most recently, Shemika was voted by her peers to attend our Annual Foundations LTC Heroes Summit. The Summit is an annual event where the best of our frontline staff from each of our facilities come to Columbus for two days and give us feedback to improve our Company and Culture.
I had the privilege of working with Shemika today, and I do mean WORK, we did five showers for our vent patients in three hours and it wasn’t rushed, but it’s more complicated than a regular shower.
Beyond knowing her stuff, Shemika is so caring and compassionate and her fellow team members deeply respected her. I asked Shemika,
"where did your motivation come from? Who inspired you?" She told me it was her grandfather. She told me he would always tell her,
“Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” She told me,
“I honestly didn’t really understand what that meant as a child, but I do understand it today, and I live by it.”
The entire team on the Vent Unit at Respiratory and Nursing Center of Dayton worked so well together; the Nursing Assistants, Nurses and Respiratory Therapist, EVERYONE was like a family. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute with this team. They are doing some incredible things with their Vents, Vent/Dialysis, and Trach patients. They were all acting with love to improve the lives of these residents and the impact, to be honest, is more than a ripple, it’s more like a tidal wave!
